  • Brutus' Speech - Ethos
  • Be patient until I've finished. Romans, fellow citizens, and friends, listen to me explain my reasons, and be silent so that you can hear me. Believe me on my honor, and respect that honor so that you will believe me.
  • Brutus' Speech - Pathos
  • If that friend then demands why I rose up against Caesar, this is my answer: it is not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more.
  • Brutus' Speech - Logos
  • Here are tears for his love, celebration for his good fortune, honor for his valor, and death for his ambition. Who here is so lowly that he would willingly be a slave?
  • Brutus references his own honor in order to convince the crowd. He repeatedly mentions it so that we are reminded of who he was and what he did before Caesar's death. In addition to this, he speaks with authority as to demonstrate how honorable he is and how we can trust him.
  • Antony's Speech - Ethos
  • You all saw that during the feast of Lupercal I presented him with a kingly crown three times, which he refused three times. Was that ambition?
  • Brutus uses the repetition of love in order to convince the crowd Caesar's death was necessary. Love is a very emotional word and its use here to compare the love that Brutus had for Rome and Caesar is very powerful. Another this figure is used powerfully here is because Brutus gets the audience feeling that Brutus saved them because of his use of Rome in his speech, mentioning he loved Rome more than Caesar, and therefore the audience.
  • Antony's Speech - Pathos
  • Bear with me; my heart is in the coffin with Caesar, and I must pause until it returns to me .
  • Brutus uses anaphora to convince the crowd of the necessity of Caesar's death. He mentions all of Caesar's good qualities as well as his only bad one, ambition. Brutus argued Caesar would become too ambitious and make Roman citizens slaves. He used logic to make people associate the idea of slavery with Caesar.
  • Antony's Speech - Logos
  • When the poor would cry, Caesar would weep--ambition should be made of sterner stuff than that. Yet Brutus says he was ambitious, and Brutus is an honorable man.
  • Antony uses ethos to convince the crowd Caesar's death was unjustified. Antony, who people knew was close to Caesar, talked about his experience delivering the crown, which Caesar denied out of humility. He also uses a rhetorical question and repetition to make the crowd think about who Caesar really was.
  • Antony uses emotion to convey his message about Caesar's death. He uses a metaphor that demonstrated that Caesar's death hit close to home to him and that he in fact had a part of him die with Caesar. This would absolutely make the crowd weary of the actions of Brutus and see him as an enemy for what he did.
  • Antony uses logic to demonstrate the evilness of what was done to Caesar. Antony provides an anecdote of how Caesar was a good person. This makes the people like Caesar. He continues on using repetition to show them how Brutus is ignorant and leads the crowd to agree with Antony.
