  • There was once an African-American girl born on October 17, 1956 in Decatur, Alabama. Her named was Mae Carol Jemison and she was the youngest of her three siblings. Her parents were Charlie and Dorothy Jemison. From an young age, Mae's parents knew she would be an caring person who would make history doing something spectacular one day.

  • When Mae turned 3 years old, her parents decided to move the family to Chicago so Mae could have an better education. There she would explore her love for science with the teachings of her uncle. He started to tell her about the planets, the stars, and space. Since then, Mae had fell in love with the idea of space and wanted to learn more.

  • One day in Kindergarten, Mae's had asked the class about what they want to be when they grow up. Mae had answered "An scientist " but her teacher tried to correct her. She told her an nurse would be an realistic job because during Mae's time period there were few women scientists shown in the media. The moment stuck with her forever.

  • As time passed in school, Mae turned 16 and was ready to go to an popular school called "Stanford College". Mae was excited to pursue her education that would soon lead to an degree in Chemical Engineering and African-American studies. Sadly, Mae experienced racial discrimination in school because she was an Black women. Though, she didn't let that stop her as she went back to school at Cornell University and finished college again with an Doctorate in Medicine!

  • After graduating, Mae decided to put her degree by joining the US Peace Corps as an medical officer in 1983, Mae even had an chance to fly to African to help people in Sierra Leone and Liberia. Mae enjoyed helping families with the help of science. She enjoyed her time in Africa as she stayed there for about 2 whole years.

  • Once Mae returned to the U.S., she got an new job as a general practitioner in Los Angeles. She helped people who were sick and provided them with medicine. At the time, Mae was eager to explore more about space so she hoped to one day join NASA. Mae began studying engineering to help prepare for her application to NASA.

  • Mae's awaited time had approached as she was accepted in NASA on January 1, 1987. On September 12, 1977 Mae blasted into space on the "Endeavour". On that flight, Mae made history as the first African-American woman in space. On the spaceship, she studied the affects of weightlessness and being in space on humans and animals.

  • Out of the span of her life, Mae decided to write an book about her life journey called " Find Where the Wind Goes: Moments from my Life" on January 1, 2001. She discussed her upbringings and obstacles she experienced as an Black woman in the science field. She would go to places and share her book with others.

  • In the end, Mae C. Jemison became one of the most influential Black woman in the world. With her passion in science, she was able to become nationally known and help thousands people feel seem. She also helped people throughout the world with the use of her science and medicine e education. Mae Jemison truly ended up becoming what parents wanted her to be, a caring person who would make history.
