The Okapi in the savannah have been met with a disaster: The lower bushes of the savannah are beginning to disappear!
I'm very hungry, but I can only reach the lowest bush
Im hungry, but I can reach the fruit hanging from the tree!
One such Okapi had luck on its side, and was born with a longer neck than usual. Because of this, the Okapi was able to reach the fruit from the tree.
Delicious!
Because of this Okapi's elongated neck, it managed to survive much longer than its compatriots.
I'm one of the few left alive from the disaster
The Okapis seemed almost hopeless in the face of the disappearing lower brush of the savannah, but that one Okapi, who was lucky enough to have the ability to reach the taller bushes, allowed the species to survive through repopulation. The surviving Okapi had longer necks than usual, and those changes persisted over generations.
The new Okapi had necks so long that they coven reach the tallest trees in the savannah! Their population numbers began to rise again.
We can eat more food now!
Eventually, those Okapi turned into what today we know as, Giraffes!
