- A young, black man named Frederick Douglass works hard every day as a slave on a plantation. He learns about abolition and abolitionists from other slaves and his master's wife.
- His master, Mr. Auld, rents him out to a nearby slaveholder named Covey, who is known as a brutal and cruel slave breaker.
- As Douglass gets older, he works harder under Covey's cruel treatment and witnesses other slaves being brutally whipped.
- Far away, Frederick's mother fell ill and died. He had only seen her five times in his life, so not once did tears come from his eyes. Not once did he mourn.
- Tired of the harsh conditions, Douglass decides to run away and heads towards the woods. There, he meets a fellow slave named Sandy who gives him a root with supposed magical powers to protect him from Covey's wrath.
- Douglass returns to the plantation with the root, confident that it will protect him. The next day, when Covey approaches him with a whip, Douglass fights back with the root. The fight ends with Douglass victorious and Covey never whipping him again. However, the story ends with Douglass' fight against slavery continues.
