  • The Indian religion clashed directly with British Christianity. However, The British saw a opportunity in spreading christianity within India on which the British Empire was built. The British would treat people that did not follow their religion very poorly and would fine them for any small thing such as tolls at the river ferry or the land the crops grew on and so on. The British Imperialism would soon turn into nationalism of religion.
  • Follow our religion!
  • The British viewed themselves as superior. They felt they would have more control over India by making them follow their religion. In 1858 the British would go on to establish the British Raj which was the rule of the British Crown on the Indian subcontinent that lasted till 1947.
  • The British saw taking control over India as a great opportunity due to it not being united because of the independent states in it caused by religious difference. Consequently they could make alliances with the states helping them gain power and work together towards a common goal.
