  • Japanese troops landed at Gona and Buna on the northern coast of New Guinea on July 21, 1942, and immediately started advancing towards Kokoda village. On the morning of July 29, the Japanese forced the Maroubra Force (an ad hoc command formed from two troops), out of Kokoda, and it made a fighting retreat to Deniki, which is located 6 kilometres (4 miles) south of Kokoda village.
  • On August 8, Maroubra Force attempted to reclaim Kokoda by launching a counterattack from Deniki, but they were unsuccessful. The exhausted Australians and Papuans were forced further south along the Kokoda Track to Isurava on August 14, as food and supplies were dangerously low by that time.
  • The Japanese were less than 35 miles (56 km) from Port Moresby at their furthest point of advance. The majority of the Japanese withdrew on September 24. On November 2, the Australians and their New Guinean allies were able to defeat the Japanese and retake Kokoda village after a more fierce battle along the Kokoda Track.
