- Lyddie is going back to the cabin, and once she goes into the cabin she gets scared because she finds someone that was tall, and was not charlie. Then she found out that he was a black man, and she had never seen one before. Lyddie finds out that his name is ezekiel and that he was a runaway slave, and that he using lyddie’s shelter until he could run to freedom. Lyddie ends up giving Ezekiel all her money that she saved from selling the baby calf. Ezekiel promises lyddie that he will pay the money back.
- While Lyddie’s mother is going crazy while the bear is intruding their cabin, Lyddie tries her best to fight off the bear. She stares the bear in the eyes and the bear gets scared and goes away. Lyddie just won a fight against a bear, but her mother says that it is a curse, and many things break.
- Lyddie has to decide if she wants to go to the mill or stay at the tavern, since she has to leave Charlie, and if she is going to walk all the way to Lowell, Vermont.
