  • Douglass has run away from Covey and is too scared to return home. However, after meeting another slave who is kind to him and shows him a magic root that will stop him from being whipped, he finds the courage to return to his master.
  • I can't return home, I'll be whipped to death!
  • Unfortunately, you must return home because you won't survive out here on your own. Take this special root with you. It will prevent you from ever being whipped again.
  • The morning after Douglass's return Covey is finally going to punish him. However, after 6 months of torture he decides he's had enough and wants to fight back. The fight for a while and Douglass is doing more damage to Covey than he is to him.
  • I won't take this anymore!
  • How dare you defy me!
  • Douglass eventually wins the fight and is seen in new eyes by Covey. He is never whipped or abused again and Douglass's drive for freedom finally returns. He decides he won't ever think or act like a slave again.
  • Keep working Douglass!
