  • 1941 - What is life like at the start of the memoir?
  • 1942 - What happens with Moishe?
  • April 1944 - What rules were enforced? (p10-11)
  • Eli would spend his time studying Talmud by day and by night he would study Kabbalah with Moishe the Beadle at the synagogue.
  • May 1944 - Lining up for the train
  • Moishe was deported along with other foreign Jews and taken to a forest where many were shot and killed. He managed to escape and come back to warn the other Jews.
  • Day one - Life inside the cattle car
  • The Jews were no longer allowed to own gold, jewelry, or any other valuables. They also had curfews and were forced to wear yellow stars in order to distinguish they were Jewish.
  • Third night- Mrs. Schachter and her effect on others
  • Spent 24 hours waiting to get on the cattle cars, the men were downstairs in the synagogue and the women upstairs. There was barely any room which caused difficulty breathing.
  • Life inside the cattle car was difficult, the people felt trapped and scared. Not only was it hot inside but not everyone could sit and they had little food and water.
  • Mrs. Schachter was separated from her husband and children which broke her and made her act out by yelling about a fire that only she could see. This affected everyone else in the cattle car because they were anguished and wanted to keep hope so they shut her up.
