- I deserve to be as equal to my brother Edgar. It is transparent that he is the only legitimate son. It is no use to mull about this, but revenge is mine!
- Edmund meets Gloucester in the staircase with "the letter from Edgar".
- My Lord, there is no letter.
- What are you doing with that letter there so earnestly?
- [reads] What is this? Your brother Edgar attempting to kill me?
