  • The purpose of the experiment was to see whether participants would conform to social influence and give incorrect answers in a situation where the correct answer is obvious. 123 make American undergraduate students were tested.
  • Why did you answer incorrectly?
  • I didn't want the group to disapprove
  • The 'participants' were asked to take part in a vision test. They were seated around a table and looked at two cards, one card showed one vertical line and the other presented three vertical lines. All but one participants were confederates of the experimenter.
  • 75% of Participants
  • I conformed with the group
  • 25% of Participants
  • I didn't conform with the group
  • The 'participants' called out, in turn, which of the three lines was the same length as the test line. The real 'participant' always called out his answer last but one.
  • I will just agree with everyone else
  • Post experiment interviews revealed the majority of participants who conformed continued to privately trust their own perceptions and judgements, but changed their public behaviour, giving incorrect answers to avoid disapproval from the group.
  • A small number of participants reported that they felt doubt about the accuracy of their judgement and so conformed for the reason. Overall, 75% of the participants conformed at least once, 25% never conformed.
  • Even in unambiguous situations, there may be strong group pressure to conform; especially when the group is a unanimous majority.
