  • Mom, do you know anything about Java?
  • I got a project regarding the forests in Java. How the forests looked in the pre-colonial period and after that.
  • Yes I was thinking about the same. I'll call Sara, she must be knowing most of it because she is my senior in high school and she must have got this chapter last year.
  • I think you should go through your book and research on the internet about the same. And maybe seek help of your teacher and friends.
  • Java? Not much, I just know that Java is an island in Indonesia. And extensive human activities have led to degradation and significant deforestation. But why are you asking about Java out of the blue?
  • So you wanted me as your team mate in this project?
  • So from what I have learnt last year is that Java is an island in Indonesia. And the forests of Java which used to be lush and diverse are now subject to deforestation and degradation due to extensive human activities.
  • The transformation of forests in Java from pre-colonial, post-colonial and till recent times has been substantial.
  • Yes, because I knew that you must have learnt this chapter last year. So shall we start?
  • Why?
  • Because during the 19th and 20th centuries, Java witnessed rapid industrialization and modernization under Dutch and later Indonesian governance. Forests were further cleared for large-scale commercial logging, mining, and urbanization.
  • The expansion of transportation networks, facilitated the extraction and transportation of timber and other resources from the forests.
  • Dutch troops deliberately burnt everything to destroy Javanese resources like wood, so that it would not fall into the hands of the Japanese, who also colonized Indonesia.
  • Scorched-Earth Policy was a military strategy adopted by the Dutch during the second world war.
  • Is that so? Now tell me about the transformation of the forests from pre-colonial to post-colonial time.
  • But why did the Dutch exploit the forests in Java?
