- Harriet Tubman was born a slave ,c.1820, on a plantation in maryland.At 6 years old she was loaned out to families to take care of a baby. She was often beaten and fed scraps .

- Later in her life,Harriet worked a number on jobs : plowing fields and loading produce onto wagons etc.When she was Thirteen she went through a horrible head injury which caused her to have have blackouts and dizzy spells for the rest of her life.
- In 1854,Harriet decided to attempt an escape, She would use the underground rail road (not a real rail road) and eventually made it to pennsylvania and was free!
- In 1850 , the fugitive slave act was passed, Slaves could be taken from the North and returned back to the slave owners : Harriet ,among other slaves, had to then try get into canada to be free, where she became a conductor to help others escape too!
- Harriet also helped nurse soldiers in the civil war, even helped a military campaign that led to a rescue of 750 slaves!
- After the Civil war , Harriet lived in New York with her family. She helped poor and sick people and also spoke out for equal rights for blacks and women .
