  • 4 States of Matter
  • In previous lessons, you may have learned about the 3 different types of matter (solid, liquid, and gas), but did you know there was a fourth type of matter?
  • A particle in a liquid, on the other hand, are still touching one another. They are able to move around each other as well, meaning that it also has a fixed volume depending on the shape of the container.
  • As you know, in a solid, all of the particles are closely packed in a fixed position, thus meaning that it has a fixed volume and shape.
  • When water is heated to 100˚C, the water evaporates and turns into gas. This is a process called water vapour. Gas particles are further away from each other and they take the shape of the container.
  • States of Change
  • Plasma includes both man-made and naturally occurring plasma. Lightning, northern lights, and the stars far from Earth are all examples of natural occurring plasma.
  • Continuing to apply heat, another change of state could occur from gas to a state of matter called plasma.
  • Plasma can be found in fluorescent light bulbs and neon lights. They can also be found in plasma screen tvs.
  • In order for this change of state to occur, very strong heat must be applied to the gas. A gas can't conduct electricity, while plasma can.
