- Coraline has moved to a new house in the countryside. She is bored so she goes exploring.
- Climax
- While exploring Coraline discovers a door with bricks behind it.Next Coraline goes through the door because the bricks have disappeared even though the mice told her not to. She meets her Other Mother who tries to convince Coraline to stay and sew buttons into her eyes.
- Falling Action
- Then Coraline discovers her parents are missing and has to go back through the door. She finds ghost children and has to find their souls in order to escape. She finds all three of the marbles. The cat helps too.
- Resolution
- "'No,' said Coraline. 'I’m not.' And, hard as she could, she threw the black cat toward the other mother. It yowled and landed on the other mother’s head, claws flailing, teeth bared, fierce and angry. Fur on end, it looked half again as big as it was in real life." (p. 97)

- "'She hates you,' blurted out the boy. 'She hasn’t lost anything for so long. Be wise. Be brave. Be tricky.' 'But it’s not fair,' said Coraline, in her dream, angrily. 'It’s just not fair. It should be over.'.. The three of them came to a small wooden bridge over a stream. They stopped there and turned and waved, and Coraline waved back." (p. 120)
- "Time slowed for Coraline. The white fingers closed around the black key. . . And then the weight and the momentum of the hand sent the plastic dolls’ cups flying, and the paper tablecloth, the key, and the other mother’s right hand went tumbling down into the darkness of the well." (p. 167)
