- It all started off with Henry and Thomas meeting and becoming great friends. They had lots of fun over the years, and they shared multiple similar interests and embraced extravagant lifestyles.
- The ‘Agreement’
- Let’s sort things out, like old times
- Due to their friendship, and Henry’s desire to have control over the Church, he made Becket the Archbishop of Canterbury. Becket took this role very seriously, and refused to make changes to the Church and their courts.
- Henry’s Plan
- Rid me of this turbulent priest!
- Becket was becoming increasingly worried about what Henry was going to do to him, after all the arguments that had happened between them. He therefore decided to flee to France where he stayed for the next six years.
- Becket’s Death
- Once Becket had returned from France, he met with Henry several times, trying to reach agreement. However, Becket excommunicated bishops who had helped Henry and he went back to his loyal position with the Church.
- Henry was outraged that Becket had returned unchanged and that he excommunicated those who had helped him. One day, Henry had had enough and he sent his knights to find Becket in Canterbury and punish him for showing such disloyalty to the king.
- Once Henry’s knights arrived at Canterbury they immediately ordered Becket to come with them. Becket refused, which made the knights even more furious with him. Becket was brutally murdered by one of them, which left Henry grieving for years.
