  • Gandhi was born in Porbandar, in India in 1869. He was called Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and was raised by Hindu parents. Gandhi remained a Hindu throughout his life, but had many Christian and Muslim friends as a child, as well as being influenced by Jainismv (another religious group).
  • The 'Quit India' Movement
  • After Gandhi had become a lawyer, he moved to South Africa. Since the British Empire was in control at the time, Indians did not have the same rights as white people. Gandhi held a campaign in South Africa which lasted for 8 years. His followers were imprisoned, beaten up and shot by authorities. He did have some success in ending unfair taxes for Indians and getting the government to accept Indian marriages.

  • His most famous protest came in 1930 with the salt marches. This was a protest against the tax on salt, which affected India’s poorest citizens. Thousands of Indians followed Gandhi from Ahmadabad to the Arabian Sea, which was a distance of 240 miles over 24 days.
  • The Death of Mahatma Gandhi
  • Gandhi actually left politics in 1934 and so the fight for independence was not always consistent. However, he did return to the spotlight during World War Two with the ‘Quit India’ movement. Gandhi was not the only person campaigning for Indian independence. There was also Muhammad Ali Jinnah of the All India Muslim League that was working for independence from the British too.
  • In 1947, independence for India was granted but there was a partition. The partition of India and Pakistan. This caused large amounts of fighting and death. During fighting between Muslims and Hindus in India, Gandhi threatened to fast (hunger strike) until death. However, due to the deep love, Gandhi had inspired in the people, this threat made some of the fightings come to an end.
  • If you keep on fighting, I will fast until my death.
  • Sadly, in 1948, Gandhi was shot and killed by a radical Hindu fanatic who was annoyed that he was negotiating with Jinnah and the Muslims. Roughly 1 million people followed the process of Gandhi’s body through the streets for his funeral.
