  • Uhh...
  • Do you know how to use a stove?
  • Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie started reading at a young age. She would get lost in them and developed a love of reading.
  • She felt she couldn't relate to the characters in a lot of the books she read. When she finally found African books featuring girls like her, she became very inspired to write.
  • I wonder what would happen...
  • She went to college in the United Ststes and met students and professors who had very little understanding of Africa and African people. Adichie attributes this to the poor representation of African people in literature.
  • Adichie had many interactions where it became clear that people did not understand Africa. They key to that misunderstanding was the way literature has been written over centuries. She wrote and published a book with these experiences in mind.
  • She questions how the world would change if people really understand the stories of how Nigerians and other Africans live. That includes the their successes, day to day lives, and government.
  • There is no such thing as a single story. By believing only one story exists, we fail to acknowledge so many wonderful things about the world. When we reject the single story, when we realize there is never a single story about any place, we regain a kind of paradise. - Adichie
