- Though a majority of other scientists were finally convinced that life didn't spontaneously appear, many of them still believed new cells were formed spontaneously. Robert Remak, was one of the few who disbelieved this theory and sought out to prove it wrong.
- I'm going to prove him wrong with these frog eggs!!
- Claim: The formation of new cells arise from pre-existing ones. Evidence: After looking at 100's of chicken embryos, Remak noticed that some cells were oddly shaped and seemed to be 'splitting' from old ones.Reasoning: Remak could obviously see that new cells were not spontaneously forming, instead they were born out of pre-existing ones in this process of multiplying by dividing.
- Remak presented his findings to his friend Rudolf Virchow. Virchow thought the finding was "interesting" but wasn't fully convinced that all cells were formed in this process. Furthermore, he believed that this process was inherent only to chicken embryos making him further disbelieve the theory.

- Remak sought out another experiment to prove that new cells were formed out of pre-existing ones. He pursued his theory by collecting frog eggs, from a local river. Remak knew that new life started with a the fertilization of the sperm cell by the egg cell, but he was unsure on how that fertilized cell became a fully functional organism.
- Claim: Cell division is how an organism forms, from a cellular level to a full organismEvidence: Remak sees that the cells under the microscope continuously multiply and eventually grow into a full organism Reasoning: By seeing the multiplication of cells under the microscope, Remak was able to see the fertilized cell become a tissue. Over time he would be able to see that cell would become the entire organism
- Remak was able to prove that new cells come from existing cells and even better through this process of cell multiplication, he proved that from just a small number cells, the cells multiply to become a full organism.
- Hmmm, I'm still not convinced...
