  • The people of Thebes were suffering from the massacre of men induced by the Sphynx. When Oedipus came among Thebes, he was able to answer the Sphynx's riddle correctly. This made the Sphynx kill herself, making Oedipus the savior of Thebes, and the new crowned king.

  • What goes on four feet in the morning, two feet at noon, and three feet in the evening?
  • The priest and citizens of Thebes come to Oedipus to lift the citizens of their suffering and cure the plague. After an egotistical monologue, Oedipus says how he sent Creon to the oracle for an answer.
