  • This is Phosphor the Dog. He begins his daily tasks by extracting phosphorus from rocks. This process is known as weathering. Weather events, like rain, can result in phosphorus being washed into the soil.
  • This rain better come in soon. I need to extract all this stuff that's similar to my name...
  • These look bigger than I remember...
  • Phosphorous that enters ecosystems from runoff causes microorganisms to grow. It also depletes the dissolved oxygen which could kill species like shellfish.

  • Plants absorb inorganic phosphorus. Phosphate salts that are dissolved in the water are absorbed by these plants even though the amount phosphorus present in soil is less.

  • Animals absorb phosphorus from plants or by consumption of other animals who eat plants.
  • Reminds me of a certain chain...
  • When these plants and animals die, they are decomposed by other microorganisms. Because of this, the organic form of phosphorus turns into the inorganic form, recycled in soil.
  • Looks like everything's back inside these rocks. The cycle repeats again.
  • However, humans affect this cycle by overusing fertilizers, which reduces the fertility of soil. This can be harmful to plenty of microorganisms.
  • I wonder where Phosphor has gone of to. Come on fertilizer!
