  • Gentlemen, for shame forbear this outrage! Tybalt! Mercutio! The Prince expressly hath forbid this bandying in Verona streets. hold, Tybalt! Good Mercutio!

  • Mercutio has started dueling Tybalt on Romeos behalf. Mercutio and Tybalt have no intention of actually hurting each other but Romeo still wants to stop the fight since they could get in trouble with the prince and the Verona law.

  • Courage, man, the hurt cannot be much.
  • During Romeo's attempt to stop Tybalt and Mercutio from fighting, Tybalt accidently stabs Mercutio. Petruchio and Tybalt leave while Romeo and Benvolio examine Mercutio's stab wound.
  • Help me into some house, Benvolio,Or I shall faint. A plague o’ both your houses!They have made worms’ meat of me.I have it, and soundly, too. Your houses!

  • Mercutio sends his page away to go get a surgeon for his stab wound.
  • This gentleman, the Prince’s near ally, my very friend, hath got this mortal hurtIn my behalf. My reputation stainedvwith Tybalt’s slander—Tybalt, that an hour hath been my cousin! O sweet Juliet,thy beauty hath made me effeminate and in my temper softened valor’s steel.
  • Romeo tries to play off the injury as not that bad but Mercutio tells both him and Benvolio that he is likely to die from this injury and questions Romeo as to why he came between Tybalt and him.
  • Benvolio helps bring Mercutio into one of the houses to try and treat his wound quickly before it's too late.
  • Romeo is upset over the possible death of Mercutio. He blames himself and his marriage to Juliet. He claims that the marriage is what made him too weak to face Tybalt himself.
