- The main characters are Henry/Tree, Jamison/Jams and Jack/Gunny and they are soldiers in the military together. Henry was too young to join but they needed him to fight so they let him stay, but he is starting to regret joining. Gunny is a Sargent and so they been in the military for a while and they very important to tree.
- This story takes place in the Philippines where it is very hot and the Japanese are trying to invade us during Pearl Harbor. It happened on December 7th 1941.
- The American soldiers surrendered to the Japanese because they were losing a lot of men and they were running low on supplies. The Japanese took them through the blazing sun to a camp and many more died on the way there.
- Tree decided to join the military to escape his abusive father but what he didn't realize is that the military will not be any better for him. It is always hot and humid and they just got bombed at Pearl Harbor while tree was there. He got stationed in the Philippines with his two friends Gunny and Jams. They had to surrender and they were beaten and starved while they marched to a prison camp. Gunny and tree had lost Jams and Tree found him with the injured people and he got beaten by Japanese soldiers
