- Hello My name is Stephen Altschul. Today we are going to go back in time and learn a little about me and my profession. first lets go to the very begging.
- We traveled back in time to February 28, 1957 in the United States of America. This is the day I was born a couple years later my love for Science and Math grew. Lets travel a couple years forward.
- We are here at Harvard University in 1975. I received my A.B. in mathematics from Harvard College in 1979 and then decided to go to M.I.T to get my PhD
- After studying and receiving my A.B and Ph.D I came to the NIDDK in 1987 to do postdoctoral work with Dr. David Lipman, and moved with him to the NCBI/NLM in 1989, shortly after its establishment. I served as Staff Fellow, Senior Staff Fellow and Senior Investigator.
- Yes! I finally finished school
- Here is my lab this is were I researched and focused on the development of algorithms and measures for the comparison and analysis of DNA and protein molecules. In this very lab I became the co-author of the BLAST algorithm used for sequence analysis of proteins and nucleotides.
