- Oedipus was born to King Lais and Queen Jocasta. They heard a prophecy from an Oracle about him being their demise, so they sent him to be hung in the forest. He was strung up by his feet, but the shepherd who did this felt bad, and could not leave the baby there in the woods.
- The Shepherd brought baby Oedipus to King Polybus and Queen Merope of Corinth. They gladly adopted him and raised him as their own son. He grows up not knowing that he was adopted, and one night, he was told by a drunk that his parents were not his birth parents. He thinks nothing of this statement at the time though.
- Oedipus went to an Oracle to see if there was anything that he needed to know. He was told that he would kill his father and marry his mother, and bring a plague unto the kingdom. Not wanting this to happen, he left home and headed toward the kingdom of Thebes.
- On his way to Thebes, Oedipus cross paths with King Lais, and he had no idea who he was. One of Lais's servants tried to move Oedipus from the road, but he refused to move. He fought and killed all of the men. He then continued to the kingdom of Thebes.
- When he arrived in Thebes, Oedipus heard that whoever could defeat the sphinx by solving her riddle would become king and marry Queen Jocasta. He did solve the riddle, and the sphinx was so flustered that she threw herself off of a cliff. He went on to marry Jocasta and had four children with her, all without knowing he was her son.
- For many years, Oedipus was a good king. He heard the concerns of citizens and tried to fix them. A plague fell upon Thebes, and he went to and Oracle to see what the cause was. This Oracle told him that he was the cause and that King Lais and Queen Jocasta were his birth parents. He was so devasted that he gouged his eyes out, in hopes that he would not have to look at his parents in the underworld. Queen Jocasta hung herself after finding this out as well.
