  • Sebastian is found from the shipwreck by a Sea Captain called Antonio. Sebastian introduces himself and he grieves for his twin sister, Viola whom he thinks is dead. Sebastian expresses his desire to go to Orsino's court. In addition, Antonio sees Sebastian as a surrogate son and wants to help him (by going with him to Orsino's court) even though he has enemies there.

  • Malvolio gives Cesario her ring back yet Viola/ Cesario does not want it back. Malvolio: '"She returns this ring to you, sir: you might have saved me my pains, to have taken it way yourself."Viola: "She took the of me, I'll none of it"Malvolio throws the ring at Viola and leaves.Viola (to herself): "I am the man: if it be so, as 'tis, " ..."How will this fadge? My master loves her dearly, And I, poor monster, fond as much on him, And she, mistaken, seems to dote on me:"Viola speaks to herself about disguise being a form of evil; and that Olivia is in love with her creating a love triangle.
  • Act 2 Scene 5
  • Sir Andrew and Sir Toby are drinking and partying; they call the Fool to entertain them and the Fool serenades a love song and a catch. Maria enters the room to quiet them down and soon after Malvolio followed. Malvolio, however, scolds them for misbehaving. After he leaves they decide to get revenge on Malvolio by seeing him act ridiculous in front of Olivia. So Maria decides to write a love letter to Malvolio posing as Olivia since her handwriting is similar to that of her Lady's.
  • Act 2 Scenes 1,2,3,4 and 5
  • Duke Orsino and Cesario talk about love and Orsino realises that Cesario is in love with someone and she describes him (Orsino) to the Duke although he does not realise it. Cesario tells him that Olivia does not love him. Additionally, Viola then tells Orsino a story about her sister (who does not exist) and her sister's love for a man and not telling him. Viola quickly changes the subject of the conversation after suspense is built on whether or not she will reveal herself as Viola. Cesario: "But if she cannot love you, sir?"Duke: 'I cannot be so answer'd."
  • Maria, Sir Toby, Sir Andrew and Fabian, a member of Olivia's household, hide in the garden waiting for Malvolio to come and read "Olivia's" letter. Malvolio enters the garden and he is talking to himself about Olivia choosing someone to marry and it would be great to become 'Count'. Malvolio sees the letter and although it is not addressed to anyone he suspects that it is for him and that Olivia wrote it. Malvolio reads the letter and it mentions yellow stockings cross-gartered is something she likes, which is actually the opposite.Maria: "he will come to her in yellow stockings, and 'tis a colour she abhors, and cross-gartered, a fashion she detests: he will smile upon her, which will now be so unsuitable to her disposition"
