  • During WWI (1914 - 1918) laws in India had limited some personal freedoms in the interest of everybody focusing on the war effort.At the end of the war Indians assumed that these limitations would be lifted.
  • In January 1919 , new laws were passed The Rowlatt Acts which extended the previous laws.
  • Indians protested at these laws and Gandhi called for everybody to go on strike for a day.On 10th April 1919, Gandhi, along with other Indian leaders, was arrested.
  • People in Amritsar were not happy and there was some violence.In response, the government in Punjab banned all public gatherings.
  • 13th April 191910000 people gathered on Jallianwalah Bagh in Amritsar - most were there for a religious festival and had just come from the temple, unaware of the ban on public gatherings.Some were political protesters and activists.
  • General Dyer took his soldiers, sealed off the exits to the area and ordered his men to fire which they did until they ran out of ammunition.Hundreds of people (men, women and children) were killed and wounded.
