  • Michael Obi is a Nigerian educator with a reformist mindset. He's been given the duty of reforming Ndume Central School, which has a reputation for being outdated or unprogressive.
  • Michael with his wife Nancy arrives in the village to bring it into the modern era. Their two main objectives are to maintain a good educational standard and to transform the school campus into a lovely area.
  • Michael sees an elderly woman walking down a tiny walkway that runs through the compound one evening. After speaking with a few staff members, Michael discovers that the school had previously tried to restrict the trail but was faced with strong opposition from the nearby village.
  • Michael builds a fence over the route and covers it with barbed wire to avoid making a bad impression on the Government Education Officer who is scheduled to visit. Michael meets with the village priest three days after the fence is built, who explains the significance of the path and its connection to the villagers' animist beliefs. Michael insists on keeping the path closed, explaining that the school's mission is to remove such ancient beliefs.
  • A young woman in the village dies in childbirth two days later. A diviner advises making large sacrifices to satisfy the spirits who are offended by the closed path.
  • Flowers and hedges are torn up and trampled to death in the middle of the night, and one of the school buildings is demolished. When the Government Education Officer arrives, he gives Obi a poor review and writes an ugly report on the tribal-war situation that has developed between the school and the village.
