How come you haven't told Dad Mum about Tom?

The guy… with the tattoos.

Who's Tom?

Oh… him, the one you were… you were hanging out with in the back.

Yeah. He's not my boyfriend or anything like that. He's a senior at my high school, and he's going to the University of California, Berkeley, next year to study astrophysics. He's really smart. And very helpful... with different stuff.

Well, it's none of my business.

Thanks. It's just that I haven't made that many friends…and Tom is a really nice guy. Someone I can talk to…

My lips are sealed.

So, what's this photo club thing?

It's not nothing, Fadi, I can see that it's important to you.

No… it's nothing.

It's a club where you learn how to take better pictures. There's a competition. The winner gets to go on a photo shoot. You can go to China, Africa or India.

India?

Yup, India. Right next door to Pakistan. But it's fifty dollars to join… It's too expensive, like Mom said. We don't have that kind of money to waste.

I've seen the pictures you and Dad used to take. They were pretty good.

I'll give you the money.

I don't know.

That money could pay bills, help with the groceries.

Thanks!

Take it. I'm not trying to buy you off, you know.

Thanks, I guess.

This scene at the McDonald restaurant portrays the relationship between Fadi and his sister, Noor. Noor told Fadi about her social life and Fadi respected her sister's privacy by not revealing to their parents. When Noor noticed that his brother who was good in photography, was not joining the photo club in school, she showed her concern by asking Fadi. Upon knowing his dilemma of joining the photo club, Noor could understand Fadi's eagerness to find their sister, Mariam and his concern on his family's financial situation. After much consideration, she offered to help and supported him by using her salary to pay for his membership fee. Her gesture surprises Fadi because he used to have an adversarial relationship with her. Hence, their meetup at the MacDonald had showed that their relationship became closer when they got to know more about each other and were able to communicate more comfortably. They had showed understanding, care, sympathy and concern for each other.
