  • We poor people live in cramped apartments with no running water. Crime, disease, and fire were great dangers. The buildings were often poorly constructed, sometimes collapsing.
  • We, wealthy Romans, earned our money and got rich from agriculture. We own huge lands and farms, worked by poor Romans or slaves.We also earned our fortunes through business.We upper-class Romans lived in one- and two-story houses as large as a city block with courtyards, gardens, and even running water. Many elite families also owned villas or large country homes.We Wealthy Romans took care of our business interests and political careers.

  • We slaves had no rights. We were bought and sold as property. We can be beaten or killed by masters for any reason. Our children were slaves, too. We worked in the mines or on large farms. Slaves often died quickly due to brutal treatment.Other slaves had an easier life, working in the homes of the wealthy, and performing housework for their masters.Some educated slaves worked as secretaries or teachers.Slaves who served faithfully could be freed as a reward. They can also save up to buy their freedom. Freed slaves became citizens and had the right to vote. Some slaves resisted their masters. One famous fighter was Spartacus, who led an army of rebellious slaves.
