- On Monday evening, Father goes out to fix a flooded cellar, so Christopher sneaks into Father’s room. He counts 43 letters addressed to him in the same handwriting.
- In the first letter, Mother talks about how she remembers Christopher play with a wooden train set that she had given him for Christmas. Mother gives her reasons for leaving the family in the following letter. She describes a day when she was shopping for Christmas and Christopher threw a fit in a busy store. As Mother attempted to leave with Christopher due to his fear all the crowd of the store, he screamed, threw two mixers off a nearby shelf, and destroyed them .
- Mother knew he wouldn't want to board a packed bus, so when he wouldn't stop yelling, they had to walk home. Father got upset with Mother for being selfish after she sobbed to him at home.Mother talks about how she started to get quite lonely and fight a lot with Father. Following that, she began to spend a lot of time with Roger. Roger claimed that he no longer loved Eileen and asked Mother to replace Father for him.
- At dinner one night, Christopher threw a chopping board, breaking her toes in the process. She was unable to walk for a month after having to go to the hospital. Father then accused her of losing her temper. When she was getting better, she noticed how much more calm Christopher was around Father than with her.
