  • Good evening my name is Suzanne Aubert, I was born on 19th June 1835 and tonight I’m going to tell you a little bit about what I’ve done in my lifetime

  • As I sat at my office for hours on end, I was waiting for someone to tell me what to do. After tossing and Turing I just settled for Hawkes bay. In 1871 I thanked bishop pompallier for the opportunity he had given me, and said goodbye to the diocese .
  • I was ecstatic , as soon as I was entering Auckland, but I immediately wanted to get stuck into career role.

  • In 1861 I started working with Maori girls at boarding schools that I loved dearly. I grew some really good relationships with some of them as well
  • On Christmas Day 1885, Bishop Redwood blessed me and Maori with the St Joseph’s church. When it, unfortunately burnt down 3 years later, so I went on tour to earn money to build Our lady of compassion

  • In 1871 After arriving in the bay I started working at the Marist Maori mission station in Meanee Hawkes bay with the Third order of Mary.

  • Most of these people couldn’t speak English so i became a Maori translator, so I was able to comprehend what they were saying. I gave all the people the resources they needed to get back on track.
  • But nearly after a century later my empire I created is still going. Amazing people have followed in my footsteps and I couldn’t be any prouder.
  • Until in late 1926 I became very sick to the point where I couldn’t do my job anymore. On the 1st October I passed away.
  • When people heard that I became a translator I got offers all around New Zealand to translate for people. So I traveled for a decades, but also kept Our lady’s of compassion alive.
  • In 1883 I received a letter from the Maori of the whanganui river to revive the catholic mission in Hiruhārama/Jerusalem. I took the chance and left Hawkes bay in 1883
  • In 1893 after going on tour, I ended up getting €1000, enough to build a new church and convent. And in 1894 I was appointed as Mother superior of the newly established Our lady of compassion

  • As I got back to the office, there was a letter at the table wondering if I wanted to go work, ( professionally) in Hawkes bay
  • After working as a catholic missionary for several years I turned to the Marist Maori mission in Hawkes bay
  • In 1860 After working as a nurse in my homeland, France I traveled to New Zealand to work as a catholic missionary in Auckland
  • “I wanted a change ” which is what I said to myself every night for a few weeks. So I gave into my thoughts and said goodbye to the catholic missions.
  • After working the catholic missionaries for several years, in 1871 I turned to the Marist Maori mission in Hawkes bay
