The African savannah is home to a variety of gazelle-- some are large, fast and strong, while others are small, slow, and weak. Some are light in color, some are dark. Some are cunning, others are not. These differences are inherited from their parents.
During one specific year in the African savannah, many, many gazelles were born compared to the years prior. Among the survivors was Gary.
Gary
Gary had many, many friends. Every day was the ultimate game of survival, whether it was food, water, or outrunning a lion.

Genetic Variation
Gary has noticed his friends who were slow and clumsy were being eaten by lions. Gary seemed to have stronger leg muscles and and could outrun the lions. Because Gary was the fastest out of all of his friends, he and all of his other fast friends, were able to avoid being killed by lions. Gary grew up and was able to have offspring, passing down his speed to another generation.
