  • FLorence Mills was born on January 25, 1896, in Washington, D.C. She was born of formerly enslaved parents, Nellie (Simon) and John Winfrey. Her original name wasn’t Florence Mills, it was Florence Winfrey.
  • Florence began performing as a child. And when she was just six years old, her and her two older sisters, Olivia and Maude, formed a vaudeville act, calling themselves the Mills Sisters.

  • When the Mills Sisters ended, she was determined to continue performing. Florence became well known in New York as a Broadway performer. She was one of the most popular jazz singers and dancers at the time. As Well as performing, Florence MIlls also appeared on many shows such as 'Shuffle Along,' 'Plantation Revue', and 'Blackbirds. ' This is how she gained her her fame.
  • Florence MIlls experienced a lot of racism and discrimination throughout her life, as well as being born into poverty. But she persevered and she is now known as one of the most popular jazz performers. And not only was she a star, but also a role model. And well known as "an ambassador of goodwill from the blacks to the whites... a living example of the potentialities of the Negro of ability when given a chance to make good".
  • Florence was a big supporter of equal rights for African Americans, and broke many racial barriers. She was a big influence during the Harlem Renaissance. This is shown in her signature song "I'm a Little Blackbird". Florence MIlls made an impression of lifting people's spirits with her upbeat jazzy style, and making people happy, getting the name 'The Queen of Happiness'.
