  • The Roman Catholic Church had so much power. The Pope fought for power with the Kings and if they did not obey his commands, he would make it so they would not be able to receive the sacraments.
  • The Protestant Movement
  • The Protestant Movement is the solution to the problems with the Roman Catholic Church.
  • John Wycliffe, Jan Hus, and Martin Luther denounced the sale of indulgences. Martin Luther wrote "95 Theses", a list of 95 arguments against indulgences.
  • The Calvanists
  • Luther started a new branch of Christianity that was known as Lutheranism and they used the name Protestant because they were protesting the Roman Catholic Church.
  • King Henry VIII
  • I want to divorce my wife!
  • People supported the Protestant movement because they thought it would fix the Church. There were tensions between the Catholics and Protestants and the thirty years war happened.
  • John Calvin was the leader of a group in Switzerland that formed Theocracy. These people, Calvanists, were opposed by Catholics and Lutherans. Protestants had more radical ideas than Lutherans and Calvanists. Protestants from France were called Huguenots.
  • Salvation is gained through faith, God is all powerful, humans are sinful by their very nature.
  • King Henry VIII was against the Reformation until he wanted to annul his marriage. Parliament passed the 1534 Act of Supremacy that replaced the Pope as the head of the Church of England with King Henry VIII so he could now annul his marriage.
