  • Why me Lord?
  • MALIK! COULD YOU TAKE OUT THE TRASH AND ROLL IT DOWN TO THE DRIVEWAY?!
  • OKAY, I"M COMING!
  • I'll be right back mah!
  • I can't wait to go back to sleep.
  • Once a week in my neighborhood, all the residents wheel out there trash at the end of their driveways for the trash collectors to pick up. Later, this trash will be dumped into one of a few landfills in the local area. The trash collection process does not follow the 3 Principles of Sustainability. According to the EPA, in 2021, medium and heavy duty trucks (garbage trucks are a part of this) were the second largest contributor to the total transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions. The EPA also states that in 2018, glass, metals, plastic, and misc. inorganic waste made up 35.4% of all landfill waste. So, 35.4% of 149.1 million tons (15.14 million tons) of trash were non-biodegradable items.
  • Solar Energy
  • Biodiversity
  • Sustainability
  • WORD
  • The variety of genes, species, ecosystems, and ecosystem processes.
  • The sun's energy warms the planet and provides energy that plants use to produce nutrients, the chemicals that plants and animals need to survive.
  • Ability of Earth's various systems, including human cultural systems and economies, to survive and adapt to changing environmental conditions indefinitely.
  • DEFINITION
  • As trash is collected in my neighborhood, loads of fuel emissions are emptied into the air and garbage is being dumped into landfills, which aren't sustainable practices.
  • The construction alone for landfills wipes out many species of animals in the area that is cleared out. On top of that, hundreds of gallons of trash is stored in these areas and only animals that can maintain that lifestyle are insects and some rodents, causing a lack of biodiversity.
  • Greenhouse emissions mix with clouds to create smog. Smog blocks the sunlight and prevents plants from getting the nutrients they need.
  • HOW IT'S APPLIED
  • Ecosystem Services
  • Natural Resources
  • Nutrient Cycling
  • Natural Capital
  • WORD
  • Natural resources and natural services that keep us and other species alive and support our economies.
  • Materials, such as air, water, and soil, and forms of energy in nature that are essential or useful to humans.
  • The circulation of chemicals from the environment (mostly from soil and water) through organisms and back to the environment.
  • Natural Services that support life on Earth and are essential to the quality of human life and the functioning of the world's economies
  • DEFINITION
  • Landfills and greenhouse gases from trucks do not support ecosystem services as it hinders life instead of supporting it.
  • Landfills cause plastic to pollute drinkable water, and the fumes pollutes the air.
  • Landfills are filled with non-biodegradable objects such as plastic, metal, and glass. How can nutrient cycling happen, if the soil/water can't absorb most of what's in a landfill.
  • Greenhouse emissions that garbage trucks contribute to dissolve the ozone layer which makes our environment unnaturally hotter. Some species are unable to live in such an environement.
