  • Robert Hooke was born in 1635 and died in 1703. He was observing cork through a microscope and discovered the tiny cells in the cork. This lead to the understanding that cells are the smallest unit of life. And, he was born in the Netherlands.

  • Robert Brown was alive from 1773-1858. He discovered the nucleus of the cell. He also discovered the Brownian motion which is the random motion of microscopic particles.

  • Matthias Schleiden lived from 1804-1881. He defined the cell as the basic unit of plant structure. He discovered this during the 19th century.

  • Theodor Schwann lived from 1810-1882. He had stated that plant tissues were composed of cells. He concluded that all tissues are made up from cells and this laid foundations for the cell theory.
