The United States supported the Cuban Rebellion because they had millions of dollars invested in businesses in Cuba and there were a lot of US citizens that lived there. The US was interested in purchasing Cuba before the 1900s. The De Lome Letter was a letter that was written by Enrique Dupuy de Lome, Spanish Minister to Washington, the letter criticized the American President William McKinley by calling him weak and concerned only with the gaining favor of the crowd.The sinking of USS Maine incited the US against Spain, and eventually lead to a naval blockage of Cuba and a declaration of war.

The United States got recognized as a world power because it stood ahead or nearly ahead of almost all other countries in terms of population, geographical size and location, economical resources, and military potential.
