- Many citizens tried running but couldn't get away quick enough. Leaving them to be left in 9m of deep ash.
- 18 hours after the first explosion a massive one occured! Breaking a huge chunk of the mountain off.
- Not far from Pompeii there was a man called Pliny who saw the entire eruption happen, his notes helped scientists understand the sequence.
- He described the eruption as a "Stone Pine Tree"
- In 1748 archaeologists discovered Pompeii
- It took over 200 years to dig out the thick layer of ash and soil.
