- Charlie Gordan is a 32 year old, with a mental disability who has an iq of 68. He goes to a school for slow adults, and there he is chosen for a mind altering surgery, that will help triple his intelligence. Charlie is very excited about this because he has always wanted to be genius. 
- Climax
- Charlie works at a bakery where he is constantly made fun of by his co-workers. An ongoing joke their is saying "You really pulled a Charlie Gordon." Signifying that someone has messed up idiotically. 
- Falling action
- In an operating room Charlie is giving the surgery to alter his brain. The operation is done my 2 doctors, Dr. Neymar, and Dr. Straus.  
- Resolution 
- The doctors have told Charlie that Algernon normal efficiency at completing the maze has decreased. This worries Charlies, so he chooses to research on the experiment. Charlie does this because the doctors told him that they're not intelligent to do the in depth research that is needed to see what would happen to Charlie. 
- After Charlie finished his research he realizes that he'll end up just like Algernon. Having the same burnout, and memory issues. To add on, Algernon dies and causes Charlie to become very upset, and sad. Charlie becomes angry at the doctors for going through with the experiment. 
- With Charlies high intellect now gone, he returns to his normal, pre experiment life. He goes back to school, and learns things all over again with his classmates, and Ms. Kinnian. Because of this, Ms. Kinnian is sad because she could no longer keep her relationship with Charlie.
