As dawn turned to dusk Grendel approached the great hall, stalking his way through the misty swamps until his arrival.
He laughed to himself at the sight of all the sleeping men thinking that he would kill and feast upone them all but fate had other plans...
All the guards laid asleep while he walked in the shadows, preparing to strike.
Before long Grendel grabbed a man, killed him and drank his blood. Then he turned towards Beowulf who put up a fight and struck him.
Grendel never felt such strength from a man before. He was appalled and he tried to run but Beowulf tightened his grasps. (1)
At this point all the men were awake and they could hardly believe their eyes. They tried to help out Beowulf by fighting with their swords but no sword could injure Grendel. (2)
As they watched Beowulf tore Grendels arm out of its socket as Grendel wailed. (3)
Afterwards, Grendel ran back to his den and there he died.
Grendels arm was mounted unto the wall of the hall as a display of Beowulfs great victory.
