Governor of Ohio, who held a reputation for honesty. His party felt strongly towards the civil rights for emancipated slaves. He held moderate views towards the reconstruction.
Compromise of 1877
Tilden was the governor of New York and was famous for fighting political corruption. He strongly appealed to delegates in the south.
Tilden is the winner by a near 250,000 popular votes. However, had 184 electoral votes, one less than needed to win. And so the outcome was debated. By a vote of a small group consisting of 7 Republicans, 7 Democrats, and 1 individual, Hayes was voted president and later ended up president.
Meant that troops would be drawn from the South, in order that Democrats in turn promised to maintain African American rights. In Hayes' inauguration speech he declared that the federal government would stop attempting to reshape the Southern states. End's the reconstruction.
