  • Standardized Testing has been around since the 1800's but the govenrment started having heavier roles in it in the 1960's. In 2002, The No Child Left Behind Act was passed that mandated all 50 states have some sort of standardized testing in place to measure how schools were doing and ensuring students were learning properly and effectively.

  • While grading practices can be subjective and teachers can all have different methods of teaching, Standardized tesing can provide a consistent national measure of where students should be according to their grade level. What some people do not realize is that tests can easily be influenced by outside factors such as students home life, learning dissabilities and teachers methods of teaching.

  • Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) is passed in 2015 and replaces the No Child Left Behind Act. While the Act still mandates testing in grade school, it provides more flexibility with the kinds of testing and schools are provided more funding that they can choose what programs to do with them. It also allows for more school transparency and allows parents to be more involved.
  • In 2022, Florida Governor, Ron DeSantis signed a measure that would get rid of Florida Standards Assesment and instead begin progress monitoring tests that would require schools to have tests 3 times a year to measure a students growth at the beginning, middle and end of the school year. The hope is to have early intervention in learning and ease the pressure of a students capabilities residing in one test but some say that it still does not have teachers and students in mind as it is not learning focused.
