  • Upon returning from the underworld, Circe takes Odysseus aside. She tells him all about the threats he and his crew will encounter on their journey after leaving her island. First, she told him about the sirens, who bewitch passing sailors into losing all thoughts of home, and then kill them. Then, she told him about Scylla, a monster with six heads who eats one man from each ship for every head she has; and Charybdis, a monster that swallows the sea and spews it back out three times per day. Finally, she tells Odysseus about the island of Thrinacia, where Helios' cattle graze. She advises him to avoid this island, for if his crew is caught killing the cattle, they could be destroyed.
  • "So: all those trials are over. Listen with care to this, now, and a god will arm your mind."
  • Okay.
  • Early that morning, Odysseus and his men ready themselves for their journey. Odysseus decides to only tell his men about the sirens in order to keep their spirits up.
