- The word Red is repeated a lot in this story. The color red represents death and blood. "It lay on the earth like a broken vase of red flowers. Red shows you what may occur in the story
- The style of this story is foreshadowing. There is a lot of moments that tell you what may happen in the story. " Red birds are really bad luck". Which foreshadows Doodles death.
- The Theme of the story is to not let pride take over you. Brother helps Doodle out of selfishness. Because of his selfishness Doodle loses his life
