- Zeus, in love with Io, tried to hide his affair from Hera.
- Hera appeared and Zeus turned Io into a cow to hide the affair. Hera demanded the cow as a gift.

- Hera tasked the many-eyed Argus with watching over Io.
- Zeus sent Hermes to kill Argus so Io could go free. Devastated by the loss, Hera gathered Argus's eyes and put them on the feathers of the peacock.
- Furious, Hera sent a gad-fly to attack Io so that she could not eat, drink or rest. She met Prometheus who assured her that she must continue on her journey to the Nile where she would finally be rewarded for her suffering.
- Once Io reached the river, Zeus transformed her back into a woman and they had a child together. Generations later, Io's descendent, Hercules, would be the one to free Prometheus from his daily torture.
