  • Odysseus and his men find another island. At the center of the island, they find a house surrounded by wild animals. They find out the island is inhabited by Circe, who transforms his men into animals. Hermes gives Odysseus a herb, which will protect him from Circe’s magic. He makes her release all his men. After a year, they continue to sail home.
  • “Then some of my men urged me to resume the voyage home, and I knew they were right.”
  • Odysseus is advised to meet Tiresias, the great seer. They journey to the Land of the Dead and meet friends who have passed away. He also visits his mother, who was still alive when he left Ithaca. She gives him news about the rest of his family.
  • “Your son is well, stout, and strong of limb and mind. Your wife pines for you, soaking the floors with salt tears. So does your father; he has exiled himself to the hills, where he sleeps with the shepherds.”
  • They set sail for home, passing the sirens, the Charybdis, and the Scylla. Circe tells him that the Scylla will take 6 of his men. Odysseus does not tell his crew what lies ahead.
  • “This I had not told the crew, for it would only make their knees shake, and there was nothing they could do.”
  • Circe warns them to steer clear of the island of Thrinacia and not eat the cattle. Odysseus’s men do not listen and are now cursed. When they go back to sea, the ship is struck by lightning, and Odysseus is the only survivor. King Alcinous promises to get him back home.
  • “Now your troubles are ended. My friend, we’ve kept you here long enough. The ship is ready. You’ll be home soon, king of Ithaca.”
