  • The policeman on the beat moved up the avenue impressively. He went on trying doors as he went. When he was walking, he saw a man with a cigar in his mouth there.
  • The man from the west explained his reason for waiting her. He was waiting here for a friend.
  • It's alright officer. I'm just waiting for my friend. His name is Jimmy Wells. We both made a promise to meet at this place. Jimmy is the most trustworthy person, so I know he will come.
  • He went on describing about his friend while the policeman listened patiently to his story. The policeman later went on his way while the man from the west was waiting for his friend.
  • Twenty years ago, me and Jimmy Wells dined here at Big Joe Brady which is closed down currently. Me and Jimmy had different career options. I was called from the west and Jimmy stayed in New York. I earned a lot of wealth from the west. We promised to meet here after twenty years.
  • Sounds interesting. Well, Good night sir.
  • Twenty minutes later, a tall man in a long overcoat with collars turned up to his years, hurried across from the opposite side of the street. He went directly to the waiting man.
  • You've changed lots Jimmy. I never thought you were so tall. You've gained two or three inches.
  • Bless my heart! It's Bob, sure as fate. I was certain I would find you here if you were alive. How has the west been treating you?
  • Is that you Jimmy Wells?
  • Is that you Bob?
  • The two men started up the street, arm in arm. The man from the west, his egotism enlarged with success, was beginning to outline the history of his career. The other, submerged in his overcoat, listened with interest. They both came to a drug store brilliant with electric lights. Both then stared at each other.
  • It sometimes changes a good man into a bad one. You've been under arrest for ten minutes, 'Silky' Bob. Now, before we go on to the station here's a note from Patrolman Wells. I was asked to hand it to you.
  • Wait, you're not Jimmy Wells! Twenty years is a long time but not long enough to change a man's nose from a Roman's to a pug's.
  • The man from the west unfolded the little piece of paper handed him. His hand was steady when he began to read, but it trembled a little by the time he had finished. The note was rather short.
  • Bob: I was at the appointed place on time. When you struck the match to light your cigar, I saw it was the face of the man wanted in Chicago. Somehow, I couldn't do it myself, so I went around and got a plain-clothed man to do the job. -Jimmy'
