  • John Jay was sent to Britain to solve problems with them. Britain was impressing US sailors by forcing them to work in the British Navy, in the war against France. When John Jay returned with the Jay Treaty it really did not benefit the United States a whole lot. It said that the British would remove all of the troops in Northwest Territory, which was already suppose to happen in the Treaty of Paris. This angered many Democratic-republicans but this made the Federalists happy.

  • in September 19, 1796, Washington stepped down from office and said his "Farewell Address." The Farewell Address was some advice that Washington wanted the young nation to follow. The advice was that a president should serve no longer than two terms as president. He also warned Americans about political divisions tearing the nation apart, and finally he warned the Americans the possible problems that would rise if they entered affairs in Europe.

  • Disagreements between Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson became the start of political political parties. Some of these disagreements were about state or federal power, did they supports Britain or France, or for tariffs or against tariffs etc.

  • President John Adams sent a mission to France. He sent Charles Pinckney, John Marshall, and Elbridge Gerry. Their job was to settle issues with France because the French were attacking American ships. When the delegates arrived in France three men met them and demanded a $250,000 bribe and 12,000,000 loan in order to see the French minister. When the delegates reported the news back the United States, the American people were very angry.

  • The Alien and Sedition Acts gave the president the power to deport anyone that was considered "dangerous" to the United States . It also authorized the president to deport anyone that was from a country that the United States was at war with. The Sedition Acts made it a crime to publish false things about the government.
