  • What is Special Theory of Relativity
  • In physics, the special theory of relativity, or special relativity for short, is a scientific theory regarding the relationship between space and time. In Albert Einstein's original treatment, the theory is based on two postulates: The laws of physics are invariant in all inertial frames of reference.
  • The first postulate of special relativity is the idea that the laws of physics are the same and can be stated in their simplest form in all inertial frames of reference. The second postulate of special relativity is the idea that the speed of light c is a constant, independent of the relative motion of the source.
  • Special relativity is an explanation of how speed affects mass, time and space. As an object approaches the speed of light, the object's mass becomes infinite and so does the energy required to move it. That means it is impossible for any matter to go faster than light travels.
  • The part that makes special relativity so "special" isbecause these laws apply to everyone, everywhere at every time, including deep inside gravitational fields of all magnitudes. Special relativity was discovered first, by Einstein, in 1905.

  • Today, special relativity is proven to be the most accurate model of motion at any speed when gravitational and quantum effects are negligible. Even so, the Newtonian model is still valid as a simple and accurate approximation at low velocities (relative to the speed of light), for example, everyday motions on Earth.
